The challenge is Ithaca, not a promised land but a real place, the ultimate goal of the Odyssey. Ulysse is in vagrancy and the boat, an allegory of its uprooted captain, is threatened by desire and is about to be lost. Fastened to the mast, Ulysses is reduced to his sexual pulses but owes his salute to his deaf crew, gardians of the boat’s principles. The soul triumphs over the phallus. The sense of belonging is stronger than the song of the sirens.
