La figure du valet de trèfle est attribuée à Lancelot du lac, le héros du Chevalier de la Charrette, roman écrit au XIIème siècle par Chrétien de Troyes. Éduqué par la fée Viviane, il vouera sa vie à la quête du Graal. Le personnage se caractérise par son idéalisme et sa franche naïveté. Cette ambivalence est représentée dans les deux faces, et comme toutes les peintures de carte, Lancelot peut s’accrocher dans les deux sens.

The Jack of Clubs figure is associated to Lancelot, the hero of The Knight of the Cart which is a novel written in the 12th century by Chrétien de Troyes. Raised by the fairy Viviane, he will devote all his life to the search of the Holy Grail. The hero is characterized by his idealism and his naivety. This ambivalence is represented in the two personas, and like all card painting, Lancelot can be hanged form the two sides.
