Le très ancien jeu à la française attribue à Jules César la figure du roi de carreau, qui lui sied à merveille. Comme le carreau de l’arbalète, César frappe fort et loin. L'empereur de Rome fut un adversaire cruel pour ceux qui s'opposèrent à son autorité, mais se montra généreux envers son peuple. Les deux faces du personnage sont interprétées dans la peinture, qui peut s’accrocher dans les deux sens.

The very old french-style game is attributed to Julius Cesar, figure of the king of diamonds which would fit him perfectly. Cesar hits well and far. The Roman emperor was a cruel adversary for anyone who opposed his authority, but he would be generous with his people. These two personas are interpreted in this painting and can be hanged from the two sides.
